Gum Disease
What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is an infection that results from a build-up of bacteria on the teeth known as plaque. As more bacteria accumulate, they form hard deposits known as calculus. The bacteria give off toxins that erode the teeth, cause the gums to detach from the teeth and eat away the supporting bone. If left untreated, it can lead to gum recession, bone loss and eventual loss of teeth.
We are able to effectively treat gum disease and restore your oral health.

Causes and Signs of Gum Disease
Gum disease is typically caused by the buildup of plaque—a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth and gums. If not removed through regular brushing and flossing, plaque hardens into tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional. The bacteria in plaque and tartar can irritate the gums, leading to infection and, over time, gum disease.
Common signs of gum disease include:
- Red, swollen, or tender gums: Healthy gums should be pink and firm. Any redness or swelling is often a sign of gum inflammation.
- Bleeding gums: If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, this may be an early sign of gum disease.
- Receding gums: Gum disease can cause your gums to pull away from your teeth, making them appear longer.
- Persistent bad breath: Bacteria buildup in the mouth can lead to chronic bad breath that doesn’t go away with brushing or mouthwash.
- Loose teeth: In advanced stages of gum disease, the supporting structures of your teeth can weaken, causing teeth to become loose or even fall out.
Stages of Gum Disease
Gum disease progresses through several stages, each requiring different levels of treatment:
- Gingivitis: This is the earliest stage of gum disease, characterized by inflammation and bleeding of the gums. Gingivitis is reversible with good oral hygiene and professional cleanings.
- Periodontitis: If gingivitis is not treated, it can progress to periodontitis. This stage involves the destruction of the bone and tissues that support your teeth, potentially leading to tooth loss. Treatment at this stage is critical to prevent further damage.
- Advanced Periodontitis: In this stage, the bone and fibers supporting the teeth are severely damaged, causing teeth to loosen or fall out. More intensive treatments, such as surgery, may be required at this point.
Gum Disease Treatment Options
At Advance Dentel Center, we offer a range of treatments to address gum disease, depending on its severity. Dr. Brar will assess your condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment to restore your gum health.
1. Professional Dental Cleanings:
If you have gingivitis, professional cleanings may be all you need to reverse the condition. During a cleaning, our hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline, helping to eliminate the bacteria that cause gum inflammation.
2. Scaling and Root Planing:
For more advanced stages of gum disease, we may recommend scaling and root planing, also known as a deep cleaning. This non-surgical procedure involves removing plaque and tartar from deep pockets around the teeth and smoothing the tooth roots to prevent bacteria from reattaching. This allows the gums to heal and reattach to the teeth.
3. Antibiotic Therapy:
In some cases, Dr. Ali Rajai may prescribe antibiotics to help control bacterial infection in the gums. These medications can be used in combination with other treatments, such as scaling and root planing, to enhance healing.
4. Laser Gum Treatment:
Advance Dental Center uses advanced laser technology to treat gum disease in a minimally invasive way. Laser treatment helps remove infected tissue and bacteria while promoting faster healing with less discomfort and downtime.
5. Surgical Treatments:
For severe cases of periodontitis, surgical treatments such as flap surgery or bone grafting may be necessary. These procedures help restore the supporting structures of the teeth and encourage the regeneration of healthy gum tissue and bone.
